Do I have to use CHAPS to transfer more than £5000?

I want to transfer more than £5000 from one back account to another at a different bank. I have only been offered the CHAPS payment system which costs £20. Can I use the slower and cheaper (free) BACS system instead or is there some maximum transfer limit?
